#Real or fake 4k movie
Hustlers is at heart a movie about friendship. A film with visual dynamics as extreme as this one - especially during the scenes in the strip club and private dancing rooms - would surely have benefitted from the extra dynamism HDR10+ and Dolby Vision’s scene by scene image data might have unlocked on compatible TVs. It’s a pity that Hustlers’ hasn’t arrived on 4K Blu-ray with any Dolby Vision or HDR10+ support there’s just a basic HDR10 transfer. At least when they’re dealing with native 4K DIs. I know high bit rates can’t always be relied on as an indicator of how 4K a 4K Blu-ray image will look, but on the evidence of Hustlers I can’t help but wish that every release went for similarly high rates. It pretty much never drops below 60Mbps, even during relatively static shots, and spends most of its time hovering between 65-75Mbps - as well as occasionally peaking above 90Mbps. It’s worth noting that the image runs at a consistently very high bit-rate. The extra detail makes the image feel grittier and more realistic too, which actually fits better with the film’s tone and themes than the ‘gentler’-looking HD Blu-ray.

Photo: Hustlers, Universal Picturesĭetail levels are outstanding, helping the image achieve a level of sharpness, texture and density far beyond the HD Blu-ray image. Hustlers approaches the strip club world with an intriguingly female gaze. And for once all this lovely high resolution shooting footage received a 4K Digital Intermediate that surely provides the source for this very good-looking 4K Blu-ray image. Hustlers was shot for the most part on digital Panavision DXL cameras, at a range of resolutions - all of which, I’m happy to report, were apparently 4K or higher. Key kit used for this review: Panasonic 65GZ1500, Samsung 65Q90R, Panasonic UB820, Oppo 205 MAX Light Level/Max Frame Average Light Level: 995/264 What you get: Region A/B/C Blu-ray, All-region 4K Blu-rayĮxtra features: Two trailers, and a feature length director’s commentary A charismatic performance by Jennifer Lopez gives the film some all-important heart and soul, though, and while the ‘female Goodfellas’ comments I’ve seen bandied about are way too optimistic, the relationship between the two leads and the unusual woman’s perspective make it worth a watch.
